Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has produced its six millionth engine at its plant in Deeside, North Wales, which begun operations in 1992.
Deeside produces engines for vehicles manufactured at the Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, along with facilities in Turkey and South Africa.
It was Toyota’s first plant outside Japan to build hybrid systems.
The occasion was marked by a visit from Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iowerth.
Toyota said that Deeside is one of its most sustainable plants globally, as it sends no waste to landfill and is powered entirely by renewable energy.
It employs 580 people and delivered 244,078 engines last year.
Ap Iowarth said: “As a new Government, we want a Welsh economy that is fit for the future. Companies like Toyota, who have been part of the fabric of their community for decades, while continuing to be at the cutting edge of new technologies, are important to the long-term health of our economy.
“It was fantastic to meet some of the staff at the beginning of their careers at Toyota and some of those that have worked here since the company first arrived on Deeside.
“To see the six millionth engine produced was a real privilege and a remarkable milestone in the history of Toyota in Wales, which I hope will continue for years to come.”
Richard Finchett, deputy managing director at Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, said: “Reaching six million engines is a testament to the commitment, expertise and teamwork of everyone who has contributed to the Deeside plant over the past 34 years.
“But it is more than just a number, it is six million examples of the quality, care and pride that go into every engine built here.”
